Corridor Screening Matrix

The potential rail corridors in the Central Arkansas area have been analyzed as to their suitability for passenger rail service. A number of general evaluation criteria are used to conduct this conceptual screening of potential alignments:

  Ridership Potential
or Markets Served
This evaluation is based on a general analysis of the CARTS 2020 travel model for each of the long-distance corridors and a conceptual analysis of an alignment's effectiveness at serving key activity centers.
Right-of-way Availability An assessment is made of an alignment's ability to accommodate a rail facility with emphasis on the size of an existing railroad right-of-way.
Freight Impacts For railroad corridors, an evaluation is made of the number of existing or proposed freight operations and how they might interfere with passenger rail activities.
Community Impacts An assessment is made of how a passenger rail alignment might impact local communities, especially related to structures and stations.
Environmental Impacts An evaluation is made of an alignment's potential environmental impacts, especially if a corridor runs through an environmentally sensitive area that could be impacted by new construction.
