Population Growth Trends

The 2020 Plan predicts that the metropolitan area's population will grow by 32% between 1995 and 2020, increasing from an estimated 547,505 in 1995 to 723,096 by 2020. The graphic below shows the population changes anticipated in most major municipalities in the region between 1995 and 2020. Note that the smaller, more outlying communities are anticipated to undergo dramatic growth during the next two decades. Conway, for example, is forecast to grow by 79%; Cabot by 91%, Mayflower by 191%, Benton by 14% and Bryant by 84%.

By contrast, Little Rock is forecast to grow by 4%, and North Little Rock is projected to lose 4% of its population by 2020. As noted earlier, the population loss forecast for the central portions of Little Rock are counterbalanced by major growth to the west and northwest. Some core areas in suburban communities (such as Conway, Jacksonville, and Benton) are also forecast to lose population, balanced by population growth in newer areas of those municipalities.
